Firestop

Firestops stop unprotected horizontal and vertical penetrations in a fire-resistance-rated wall or floor assembly from generating a path for fire and smoke to spread through structures that would have otherwise been fire-resistant, such as where a pipe runs through a firewall.

In order for a building to form a full barrier to the spread of fire and smoke, it is also necessary to seal the spaces between fire-resistant constructions, such as the linear space between a wall and the floor above.
